Memento Mori, Memento Vivere

My father was a lover of history, particularly that of the American West and its myths and stories. He always dreamed of traveling to many historical places and primarily those in his beloved western movies. My father died at fifty-five, never having visited the west. For this project, I made ceramic reliquaries with the inclusion of my father’s ashes. I took each of these to a site with historical significance or a personal connection to him. I exchanged each of these for a stone cairn and the flora from the landscape.

We all have dreams and places we imagine ourselves going. Lives we picture ourselves living. But what use is dreaming? Are they just the place we go to in our minds when we don't want to face reality or change it? Is it enough to dream, to wait for the right time, for life to give us what we want?

Memento Mori – Remember, you will die, and sooner than you think, we are not guaranteed to make it through the end of this day. What are you doing to make your dreams real?

Memento Vivere – Remember to live. Take every opportunity to seize your dreams. We will not all get the chance to travel posthumously.
